The COMNET III object’s parameters are easily adjusted to match the real-world object.
COMNET III’s object-oriented framework gives you the flexibility to try an unlimited number of ’what if’ scenarios. Your recommendations will be supported by an easy-to-understand animated picture of the network configuration you have selected—no programming required.
Get the Results You Need
As communication networks expand in scope and diversity, the planning challenge for network managers has become immense. Network monitoring tools that collect traffic data, discover and display network topologies, and display alarms are in wide use. There is a great need, however, for network design and planning tools that allow new networks or proposed changes to existing networks to be quickly evaluated before committing to a course of action. This need for performance prediction is met through simulation analysis.
In simulation analysis, the computer traces out in detail the implications and consequences of a proposed network or change. As a result, simulation is more realistic and simulation results are easier to understand than with other forms of analysis.
COMNET III provides you with simulation-based network planning.Drawing on COMNET III’s extensive and growing library of objects, you lay out your network using the icon drag-and-drop technique or, alternately, import the current topology from your Network Management System.
Simulation follows immediately—you see an animated picture and dynamic graphs while the simulation is running. You can interrupt the simulation to change parameters and take down links and nodes on the fly—
with the effect of such changes immediately apparent. Because graphical and animated results are easier to understand than numbers, your conclusions are more readily accepted by management, colleagues, and customers.
COMNET III answers your questions about link and node utilization, message delays, and congestion points
in large networks. It can answer questions about the performance of the current network topology based on historical or projected traffic loads.

COMNET III can answer questions about the performance of proposed networks or new applications:
*With historical network loads, you have a valuable network technology learning tool. By setting up a network model and experimenting with alternatives, you learn about networking technologies, especially the interactions between network components and applications.
*With projected loads, you see whether your current network can handle expected traffic growth or how much time you have before you need to upgrade the network.
*With proposed networks and applications, you can predict network performance.

COMNET III Building Blocks
As you develop your network model using COMNET III, you identify (and customize as needed) your network’s topology, workload, and protocols.
Topology
Network topology describes the layout and resources that model the desired aspect of your physical network. Topology consists of nodes to represent hardware (typically, communications equipment or computing devices), links to represent transmission media between the nodes, and ports to associate nodes to links and to model the node’s connection to the links. Nodes model computers, switches, routers, multiplexers, or any type of communication processing or computing device. Links model any type of transmission medium, ranging from LANs to satellite channels. Nodes and links each have time-to-failure and time-to-repair distributions for modeling failures or down time. A port (represented graphically as an arc connecting a node to a link) models a node’s interface to a particular link.Complex networks of nodes and links may be organized hierarchically into subnets. Each subnet represents an independent routing domain. Alternately, COMNET III’s WAN Cloud may be used for modeling wide-area network services where detailed node and link information is not available, or where a higher level of abstraction is desired.Using COMNET III, you may design your own network topology from scratch or import key aspects of your topology from your existing network management system.NodesCOMNET III models three types of nodes: Processor nodes, Router nodes, and Switch nodes. Each node type can switch packets or calls.
Processor Node. Processor nodes model computer hosts as well as communication processing devices. Each Processor node has an internal processor that executes software applications and processes packets. A Processor node also has a disk storage device to simulate file reads and writes.
A number of identical computers can be represented by a single Group node. At simulation time, COMNET III expands the Group node into the specified number of Processor nodes, each with its own independent traffic sources based on the setup of the initial group node.
When the model schedules an application for execution at a Processor node, the application waits in the node’s pending queue until the internal processor is available. When it becomes available, the processor runs the application by executing in sequence each command requested by the application. The commands are defined in the node’s Command Repertoire. There are commands for processing data, sending and answering messages, reading and writing files, establishing sessions, and suspending an application until a required message arrives.Comnet Iii Introduction
The Process Data command models software performing internal computations. The execution time is given by the node’s application processing time per cycle, multiplied by the command’s required number of cycles.
The Transport Message command produces messages that are sent to one or more destination nodes; the Answer Message command produces messages that are echoed back to the originating node of a triggering message. When a message is produced by a Transport or Answer command, the message is broken into packets according to the message’s transport protocol. The time to produce an individual packet is given by the node’s packetizing delay. Packets originating at a node (and packets arriving via ports from other nodes) also incur a packet processing delay that is a function of the packet’s routed protocol.Comnet Iii
The Read File and Write File commands model access to the node’s storage device. The access time is a function of the number of bytes accessed and the storage device’s sector size, sector transfer time, and seek time.
The Setup Session command establishes a session to a specific destination node. Once established, the session generates a specified number of messages according to an interarrival time distribution. Sessions are useful for modeling bursty message traffic and switched virtual circuit operation in subnets with connection-oriented routing.
The Wait For command evaluates a condition, and if the condition is met, it completes and gets out of the way for the next command to run. If the condition is not met, Wait For blocks until the condition is met, or until the time-out timer expires, whichever comes first. By ’block,’ we mean the application running the command sequence is suspended.
Router Node. Router nodes model routers, bridges, switches, hubs, and other devices that have a shared internal backplane that moves packets between port buffers. The backplane is characterized by a bus rate and a bus count. In addition to the internal backplane, the Router node has all of the capabilities of the Processor node, so it can, for example, run applications that update routing tables and distribute routing table information. Ports on a Router node can share a line card, which allows packets to move from an input port to an output port on the same line card without transiting a backplane bus. Nonblocking switch fabrics may also be modeled with the Router node by specifying a bus count that is at least equal to the number of line cards on the node.
The COMNET III router library contains many built-in routers with parameter settings based on test results available from the Harvard Network Device Test Lab. The library includes routers from 3Com, ACC, Cisco, DEC, HP, Novell, Proteon, Bay Networks, Cabletron, Cray Communications, Fore Systems, IBM, RAD Network Devices, Retrix, and Wellfleet, and is expanded as new test results become available.
Switch Node. Switch nodes model switches as well as routers, hubs, and other communication devices that have an insignificant delay in moving packets from input port buffers to output port buffers. Packets in an input buffer always switch to the appropriate output buffer in zero time, provided buffer space is available. The Switch node models head-of-line blocking for those switches that allow packets to wait at an input buffer for the required output buffer to become available.

Links are used to model a variety of different transmission media, ranging from LANs to wide-area point-to-point links. The physical characteristics of a link are defined in terms of bandwidth and propagation delay. The link-layer transmission unit in COMNET III is a frame. Packets are segmented or assembled into frames for transmission on a link. Each link has a frame size (minimum and maximum), a frame overhead, and a frame error rate.Comnet Iii Description
There are different types of links in COMNET III, corresponding to the type of medium access protocol used when multiple nodes need to share the same medium. The following links are modeled:
